Methodology
What each figure on this site means. Every definition below is quoted from the code that computes the figure, so the words here and the number cannot say different things. Beside each is the figure as it stands, from the snapshot taken every night.
UK opposition decisions
The decisions of the UK IPO tribunal that we hold, and what we read from them.
Median costs award
UK IPO hearing-officer opposition decisions dated in the year, costs awarded to one party, total award as extracted by the decision analysis
- UK IPO hearing-officer decisions (first instance; appointed-person appeals excluded, their awards can combine two stages)
- dated in the latest complete calendar year
- in which costs were awarded to one party (the analysis says opponent or applicant; none, each-own and deferred are not awards)
- An award the analysis states in any other form is counted as awarded but not in the median
Now: The median award in 2025 was £900 across 622 decisions, interquartile range £520 to £1,400; costs were awarded in 624, 2 of them in no single amount.
Decisions held
The headline, and the honest bound on it: a corpus is only as current as its newest decision.
Now: 12,052 decisions, 1998 to 2026; the newest dated 15 September 2026.
Decisions analysed
One row per DECISION, never per analysis row, and a quarantined analysis does not count as one.
- a decision re-analysed on two models is one decision, and a known_bad row is a mislink we keep for audit and exclude from every aggregate.
Now: 11,953 decisions analysed.
Held but not analysed
Decisions we hold but have not analysed. Stating the reason is the difference between a gap and a mystery.
Now: 11,953 analysed, 99 held out: 70 no PDF published by the IPO, 25 text ready, not yet analysed, 2 PDF stored but no readable text, 2 quarantined IPO mislink.
Years checked against the IPO listing
"Complete" is not a claim this module will make on its own. It states how many years have been checked against the IPO listing and how many matched
- A year nobody has checked says so.
Now: 29 of 29 years checked match the IPO listing, of 29 years held.
Current and older analyses
Not every analysis is the same quality. The v3.8.1 extraction on Opus is the one the intelligence pages rely on; the older passes are still there, still counted, and named as older.
Now: 10,920 on the current extraction, 1,033 on older passes.
Direct and indirect confusion shares
Sugar Bun (O-410-10, 12 August 2010) is where the direct and indirect framework starts being engaged in these decisions
- Engaged means the hearing officer worked the framework. Not engaged and unclear are excluded
Firm win share
Over hearing officer decisions; appeals to the Appointed Person are counted apart and never in the win figures. A win is an opposition rejected when the firm acted for the applicant, or fully upheld when it acted for the opponent; a partial uphold is counted as partial, for neither side; not won covers lost, withdrawn and undecided. A decision naming the firm for both parties is excluded from that firm's figures
- A partial uphold is a win for neither side: it is its own category, and won, partial and not won add to the decisions counted.
Registers
The UK, EU and US trade mark registers, each counted separately.
Marks per register
Per-jurisdiction register totals, computed once by the monitor and read by everything else.
- Stamped, always. A stored total with no computed_at beside it is a number nobody can date, which is how a stale figure survives.
Now: 3.97M UK, 3.22M EU and 14.03M US marks, counted 27 September 2026.
EU Madrid designations
EU marks that arrived as Madrid designations
Now: 446,888 EU marks.
Records from
The earliest filing date held per register
- The office's own value, anomalies included: four US rows are dated before 1870 and carry the USPTO's date, flagged, not corrected.
Now: UK from 1876, EU from 1996, US from 1823.
EU opposition decisions
EUIPO opposition decisions indexed.
Now: 332,745 decisions.
Searchable decisions
What a customer can actually search. Both decision searches require an analysed row
Now: 11,953 UK and 1,335 EU decisions.
Where the data comes from
- UK: the UK IPO's register export, over SFTP.
- EU: the EUIPO's API.
- US: the USPTO's weekly Official Gazette, with individual records looked up in TSDR.
- UK opposition decisions: the UK IPO's published decisions.
How a match is found
A new filing is matched against each monitored mark by seven text layers, the best layer counting: exact, normalised, phonetic (Double Metaphone), substring, component (a whole word inside a longer mark), Levenshtein, and token overlap.
